A recent study published in the Journal of Sports Medicine by the SSRI presents a concerning picture of physical activity levels among women in Tehran, signaling a serious warning for women's health

The research findings reveal that 43% of women in Tehran experience physical inactivity and do not engage in sufficient exercise or movement. Moreover, over 63% of women spend eight hours or more daily in a seated position, engaged in activities such as watching television, using mobile phones, doing housework, or desk jobs.

The study indicates that women with lower education levels and weaker economic status have lower physical activity levels. Married and housewives tend to be less active compared to unmarried women. Additionally, the average body mass index (BMI) is higher in the physically inactive groups, highlighting a direct link between inactivity and overweight.

The consequences of these sedentary behaviors and prolonged sitting include an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, certain cancers, and even premature mortality.

To improve women's health, the research recommends daily light physical activities like taking stairs instead of elevators, short walks, and active play with children. It also advocates breaking up long sitting periods with short breaks (e.g., every 30 minutes of sitting should be followed by 5 minutes of movement or standing).

Moderate aerobic activities (brisk walking, light cycling, aerobics) for at least 150 minutes weekly, vigorous physical activities (running, swimming, high-intensity aerobic exercises) for a minimum of 75 minutes per week, and strength/resistance training targeting the main muscle groups at least twice weekly are encouraged.
